Tash Co.’s indigo jacquard brings traditional Dong (侗族) textile inspiration from Guizhou (贵州) into the familiar form of an American Type II jacket. Two years in development, it reflects the brand’s curiosity about fabric and garment design, from the patterned cotton cloth to the custom copper buttons. This is a one-off project: all the fabric has been used up and won’t be developed again.

Fit

A short-bodied Type II with a defined shoulder and waistband hem. The compact proportions pair particularly well with higher-rise jeans and trousers. I’d keep the rest of the outfit simple: a plain T-shirt lets the fabric stand out, while a shirt and boots bring out the jacket’s workwear character.

Fabric

Pale threads gather into rippling bands across the deep indigo, their edges breaking into tiny flecks of light. Up close, the pattern becomes part of a richly textured weave. It’s the kind of cloth that makes you want to reach out and touch it.

The fabric is 100% cotton, weighing 9.7 oz (330 gsm), and uses plant-indigo-dyed yarn. Jacquard weaving builds a pattern into the cloth, giving the surface its distinctive detail. Dark and pale sections are visible in the yarn itself before it reaches the loom.

The starting point was traditional handwoven Dong cloth from Qiandongnan (黔东南), in south-east Guizhou. Adapting it for a jacket took six months of fabric development. The original cloth was narrow and lacked the stability the design needed, so Tash Co. developed a denser, machine-woven cotton jacquard. That textile inspiration became a fabric made specifically for this project, with spinning, dyeing, weaving and garment-making taking place across China.

Construction

The attention to detail continues inside, where flat-felled seams fold the raw fabric edges into the stitching for a clean, enclosed finish. Precise contrast topstitching follows the front pleats, pockets and panel seams, outlining the jacket against the patterned cloth.

Custom Tash Co. copper buttons bring a warm colour against the indigo. Buttoned flaps secure the two chest pockets, while the point collar, button cuffs and waistband hem complete the classic Type II construction.

Sizing

Website sizes are standardised to US sizing and sit one size below the sewn garment label. For example, S (US) comes with an M label. Choose your website size using the size guide; the label difference is already accounted for.

Care

Wash cold, separately from light-coloured clothing, and avoid high-temperature tumble drying. Expect indigo colour loss during washing. A slight dye odour may be present when new.
