Corduroy Hunting Jacket Review: Brown, Navy and Fit

I like the shape of my Barbour Bedale, so a similar jacket in soft, heavyweight corduroy caught my attention. In this review, I look at the brown and navy corduroy hunting jackets, show both on me and explain the one detail I would change.

I'm Mark, the owner of Hidden Stitch Supply, where I sell these jackets. The video covers the fabric, lining, pockets, hardware and fit.

Soft corduroy in brown or navy

The outer fabric is 100% cotton corduroy. It has plenty of weight but feels soft. The term 11-wale means there are 11 raised ribs across an inch of fabric. It describes the texture, rather than the fabric's weight.

The brown jacket has the same colour across the body and collar. The navy has a contrasting brown collar. Both have a relaxed shape and raglan sleeves, with a seam running from the neck towards the underarm.

A closer look inside

Cotton tartan lining runs through the body and sleeves. Along the bottom inside edge is a tougher strip of densely woven twill.

The seams are either bound or flat-felled. Bound seams cover the cut edge with a separate strip of fabric. Flat-felled seams fold the edges inside the join and stitch them down. Both make the inside look clean and help protect the edges from fraying.

There are large lower pockets with snap-fastened flaps and folded sides that give them extra depth. A chunky two-way YKK zip closes the front, with a large ring pull that is easy to hold.

The hand-warmer pockets are lined with twill. This is the detail I would change. I would prefer corduroy or moleskin for a softer feel, though the twill still feels fine against my hands.

Fit, sizing and turn-back cuffs

I'm 173 cm / 5 ft 8 in tall, weigh about 73 kg / 161 lb and have a 98 cm / 38.6 in chest. In the video, I wear brown XS (US), with M on the original label, and navy S (US), with L on the label. The navy shown on me is one size larger. My Barbour Bedale is a size 36.

The inside of each cuff changes from tartan to corduroy. You can turn it back to shorten the sleeve while keeping a neatly finished edge. The brown cuff matches the jacket; the navy reveals contrasting brown corduroy.

Use the website size and garment measurements when ordering. Compare chest, back length and raglan sleeve length with a jacket that fits you well. Leave enough room for the layers you plan to wear.

My verdict

The soft fabric, neatly finished seams and substantial hardware make these jackets worth a closer look. The hand-warmer lining is the main detail I would change, but it would not put me off wearing one.
